    Description

1966 Morgan +4 Factory COMPETITION Roadster.  1 of 11 Known To Exist.  Award-Winning
In July we completed a 500 mile round-trip to Mogwest in CA, no issues at all with the car. Drives 80+ MPH and handles and stops beautifully!  Won 2nd place trophy for the limited production class the Concours!  The head has been re-torqued since the trip, and valves adjusted.
    CHASSIS NO. 6272 --
Discovered last year in a Southern California collection and previously unaccounted for!
It was thought that 42 Competition Models were produced, as per the book "Completely Morgan" by Ken Hill, until this was discovered last year.
    Bonham's Auction Company says...  "
With its low-line two-seater body, the Plus 4 Competition is one of the most elegant of Morgans and much better looking than the 2+2 version.
It is believed that only 11 have survived."
It was re-commissioned in 2021 by Morgan expert Derek Willburn. Check out this short feature on Derek, "Man of Morgan"

. Powering this rare machine is its matching numbers 2138cc Triumph TR4 engine number CT65235ME (the "ME" designates an original Morgan engine).
    Factory Record Info:
Chassis 6272, Engine 65235, Gearbox 3943 HR, Plus 4 Competition Model.
It was originally dispatched 20 July 1966, to Basil Roy, London.
Options included: RHD. Heater, tonneau, rear bumper, lap & diagonal seat belts, badge bar, fog light, sliding side screens, air cleaner.
The Plus 4 Competition roadster was offered by special order starting in October 1965 with the last one being made in April 1967.  There are a few elements that make a Competition Plus 4 stand apart from a standard Plus 4. Immediately noticeable is the low-line steel body (looks like a low-line Super Sport). The Competition models came with bigger front spindles (3/4”), a Derrington exhaust manifold, Derrington wooden steering wheel, 72-spoke wire wheels and Armstrong Selectaride electrically adjustable rear shock absorbers. These shocks allow the driver to adjust the ride quality (softer to firmer) with a rotary switch on the dash.
During the last several months, this rare and desirable Morgan has been sorted by Morgan specialist Derek Willburn. As with all Plus 4 models of this era, the engine is the robust 2138cc Triumph TR4 with twin SU-HS6 carburetors. An exhaust header is fitted but it's not an original Derrington header. The cylinder head was recently rebuilt, and new lifters with a new 270 camshaft was installed for a higher level of performance.  A new timing chain and chain tensioner, new front seal and new rod bearings were installed. Roller rockers were installed.  The twin SU-HS6 carburetors and mechanical fuel pump have been rebuilt. The ignition system has been gone through and the timing set. A high-torque starter was added. An upgraded aluminum radiator was installed. Front calipers were rebuilt, a new master cylinder, new rear wheel cylinders and new flexible brake lines were installed.
A new wooden dashboard was expertly fabricated in mahogany and finished as original. All wiring, gauges and lighting are sorted and function as they should, with new halogen headlamps also installed.  All fluids were changed, a new water-pump was installed, as were radiator hoses and a fan belt. The 72-spoke wire wheels were blasted, painted, fitted with new tires and balanced.
The cosmetic condition of the car speaks for itself, and is in excellent all-around condition, but does exhibit a few areas of age/chips, etc. (please see the photos). Do note that while the driver's door fits well, the bottom of the passenger door doesn't (see photos) fit flush against the body as it would have new.  Door latches and hinges secure the door as they should.  The wooden body tub is in good order, and Mr. Willburn replaced and fixed any wood as needed. New inside quarter panels, new door panels, new arm rest rubbers, new kick panels and firewall rubber were installed. The chassis is in good shape with rust not an issue.
Included with the car is the appropriate weather equipment, including a tonneau cover, top and side curtains. In addition to all the extra features of a Competition model, this car is also equipped with highly desirable and valuable Super Sport bucket seats. Note too the clever placement of a battery cutoff switch behind the seats. An original tool roll with tools and lead hammer, along with a luggage rack and Brooklands-type aero windscreens are also included. Windshield wipers were not installed on the car when the photos were taken but they are included.
This engine runs very strong, and with the upgraded camshaft, has more power than stock. It starts easily and settles into a smooth idle with no issues. The Moss 4-speed shifts exactly as it should, with the clutch taking on the engine power without issue. The brakes are strong and stop the car without any wandering. It tracks and steers straight and true. We've driven the car on the freeway at sustained speeds of 80+ MPH with no issues whatsoever. Note too that with the aluminum radiator, you may drive with confidence in summertime weather.
This is a desirable, rare and valuable Morgan.  In fact, we've only located one other that sold, at a Bonhams auction in 2017.  That car sold for about ,000, here is the link...
Bonhams : The only one delivered new to Belgium, 1966 Morgan Plus 4 Two-seater Competition Roadster Chassis no. 6135
With the same looks as a Super Sports body, the low-line Plus 4 Competition roadster is arguably smarter looking than a standard +4.  It's also a better performer, and of course much more rare and therefore valuable.  Those in our family have owned, restored and raced Morgan's since the 1950's, and are also original members of the Morgan +4 Club of Southern California.
Here is your opportunity to stand far apart from the crowd with this tremendously rare and turn-key Morgan Plus 4 Competition car.
If you have less than 5 feedbacks, or negative feedback, your bids may get cancelled unless you send a Message to me so that we can correspond.
This is your chance for an ultra-rare Morgan, a model that nearly never comes up for sale.  Cheers and bid with confidence!
